ter Seven: Morphology D2050 Morphology —is the study of the forms or structure of words and their parts  A Morpheme Is… The smallest unit of meaning  A minimal unit that can have dictionary meaning and a grammatical  meaning  A minimal unit that has a constant meaning (most of the time) and definite  structure (most of the time).  Every word has at least one morpheme. Dance dance Dancing dance+ing Darcey’s Darcey+’s  Shorter short+er Wait wait   We’ve already talked about how morphemes are the smallest parts of the  word with meanings. Books=book + s=regular plural noun  o Book=morpheme + plural morpheme—s  Talks=talk + s=present tense verb  o Talk=morpheme + present tense—s  The Number of Morphemes Do NOT Equal Number of Syllables Dogs=dog + s= 2 morphemes, 1 syllable  Kissed= kiss + ed= 2 morphemes, 1 syllable  Men’s= man + plural + possessive = 2 morphemes, 1 syllable  Un=A Morpheme  This morpheme has a definite structure. It is not in any random order. o Unhappy…happyun o Unlucky…luckyun o Unsatisfied…satisfiedun “un” can only attach to certain types of morphemes  o Undog
