Cultural nationalism history, food, religion, pop culture these are the first form of nationalism Political/military nationalism brought under same gov. with the same law and military resources. 2 patterns 1) small areas brought together to become one nation (italy&germany unified by 1870 or 71) 2) Large empire is dismantled and a number of smaller national entities are carved out of this large multinational empire. (Hungarian empire) They put apart their regional identities and become national for 2 major reasons: 1)strength and protection of the land 2) technology railways unifying country making geographical distance less of a factor mail service becoming more efficient.
