© Deakin University MMM365 SEMESTER 2, 2000 3 Unit overview Strategic Management in the Commerce degree This unit is intended to be a challenging and exciting capstone study for your Bachelor of Commerce course. It is first and foremost a course about managing for long-term success and assumes a significant role for senior decision-makers in ensuring their firm’s success by the effective formulation and implementation of strategy. In studying strategic management you will need to integrate much of the knowledge you have already gained in the core BCom curriculum. This is big picture unit. Other units you will have studied were generally concerned with a defined body of discipline-based knowledge (such as economics, commercial law, accounting, and quantitative methods) or were concerned with specific function areas (such as operations management, marketing, human resource management or finance). Some units provided quantitative techniques for you to understand and replicate. This course invites you to draw together your specialist learning from other units and adopt a total enterprise perspective. To give you a greater insight into the central issues of strategic management we use a variety of case studies, mostly drawn from real life, which require you to analyse the situation and make recommendations for the future direction of the organisation. Your assessment tasks, too, are aimed at reinforcing your skills in analysis and decision making in the context of real firms facing real choices about how to gain sustainable competitive advantage.
