The Virginia colony, if we go to its very beginning and follow most of its history, was here to find riches. From the first settlement at Jamestown, where the men literally left the ship and headed inland looking for the supposed piles of gold and riches they would each acquire, to the later groups which settled the land to farm tobacco to ship back home for the money it supplied. Jamestown’s initial government, for lack of a better term, could be described as military law, although the settlement was most enlightened in many ways, including having blacks and Native Americans in the fort with the whites. The religion was Church of England (Anglican), and while worship was expected, it was not the same type of worship that other colonies had when they followed the Jamestown settlers to the Americas. Massachusetts Bay Colony was settled on different terms. They were not here for the riches that supposedly were held by the Native Americans, they were here for the hope of riches in the afterlife. They stated they wanted religious freedom, but the only freedom they desired was to be able to worship in their own faith, not for others to be free to
