December 2, 2009 Diverse Lifestyles Teen Sex Most Americans consider teen sex unacceptable thinking that teens  are too immature to handle sex responsibly Teens are more sexually active than before They engage in oral sex more, not seen as “real sex” Girls with high self esteem are less likely to have sex vs. boys with  high self esteem Teen Brains It’s okay for people age 20 or older to have premarital sex in the  U.S. Teens today are much more likely than their peers of 30 years ago  to have sex “Hook ups” and/or “friends with benefits” Teens are more likely to contract an STD Have sex younger Have more partners Highest risk of premarital pregnancy Teens who have committed to abstinence wait on average 18  months before they start having sex Once they start having sec they are less likely to use contraception Maintain “technical virginity” by having oral sex because “it can’t  cause pregnancy” What to do about teen sex? Conservative Christians promote abstinence Liberals support a comprehensive sex educations that teaches  abstinence and contraception
