Computer concepts and applications 2010-04-CIS-107-OL009 Written Assignment 3 By Gabriel A. Godart Thomas Edison State College. 1B. Describe sequential and random access, giving specific uses for each. Sequential access refers to reading or writing data consecutively. (Gary B. Shelly and Misty E. Vermaat, 2008, p. 374) It is used while trying to locate specific data on tape storage. Random access means that the device can locate a particular data item or file immediately, without having to move consecutively through items stored in front of the desired data item or file. (Gary B. Shelly and Misty E. Vermaat, 2008, p. 374) Hard disks, CDs and DVDs use random access. 2B. Describe each of the following: disk defragmenter, cold and warm boot, multiuser, and kernel. A disk defragmenter is a utility that reorganizes the files and unused space on a hard disk so that files can be accessed more quickly and programs run faster. (Gary B. Shelly and Misty E. Vermaat, 2008, p. 414)
