What functions does it perform? What is GUI? An operating system is an overarching program that manages the resources of the computer. It runs programs and provides them with access to memory, input/output devices, a file system, and other services. It gives users a way to control programs and organize files. (Henderson, 2009, pp. 352-353). Others functions performed by the operating system are the establishment of internet connections, the configuration of devices and in some cases, the control of a network and the administration of security. It also monitors the computer’s performance. A GUI is a graphical user interface which was first provided by Microsoft’s first version of Windows, Windows 3.x, in 1990. 2B. Describe the various types of transmission media. Give specific uses for each. Transmission media consists of materials or substances capable of carrying one or more signals. (Gary B.
