Growing Up Digital: Generational Context 1. Silent Generation (1921-44) : “I will cope” (generous, hard to lead, can’t decide, parents affected by the Great Depression) Grew up as the suffocated children of war and economic depression. They came of age under the influence of WWII (too late to be war heroes and too early to be youthful free spirits of the 60s). 2. Baby Boomers (1945-62): “I will be satisfied” (idealistic, came of age in the hippie generation, less optimistic, impatient). “The Me Generation” This generation were the first to be raised in an atmosphere of permissiveness. They came of age rebelling against the beliefs of their parents (hippie movement). 3. Generation X (1963-80): “I live in a hard world” (children of divorce, influenced by TV, beginning of the Internet, education oriented) Survived a “hurried” childhood and have been portrayed as “wild” and unsettled. 4.
