Unformatted text preview: Lecture 3: CONFL ICT PERSPECT IVE A. What is Conflict Perspective? The conflict theorists believe that society is a complex system characterized by inequality and conflict that generates social change. Both functional perspective and conflict persp. agree that societies are complex; but functionalists say it is good whereas conflict (Marxist) says it’s bad because it leads to conflict. B. Main Features • Various parts of social system do not fit together harmoniously-unlike functional persp. Society is not integrated, not harmonious- there is rich and poor people; • Social order through force- all over the world there are people who are harmonious because it is forced to them by people in the ruling class- done so to control and put things in order so that they keep it the way it is; e.g ruling class in Saudi Arabia, if they see any form of threat they will do all in their power to eradicate them • Competing goals of individuals leads to conflicts- the highest conflict is physical conflict • Limited resources lead to conflicts- population increase leads to more consumption • Conflict is the major source of real change in society – real change only comes with real conflict and things are changed completely • Conflict theorists t ry to analyze who benefits from particular social arrangements - e.g family is a social arrangement; need to figure out who will be the beneficiary e.g man is to rule the family and he supports that by referring to the Bible, Quran, physical biology. the people at the very top make us believe certain things C.
