Through lecture and discussion groups we have examined societal impacts of  technologies on society; Especially energy and transportation. Technology has made our lives materially better: - Live longer - Better understanding of the world - More physically comfortable; more and better "stuff" Does this technology associated with "material progress" makes us more satisfied,  happier people. Look at Three Issues 1. Technology, Progress and Happiness 2. What has been the effect of material progress? 3. Do we feel happy as a result of material benefits? 1. Issue: technology, Progress and Happiness Odd thing to talk about Pertain to ideas raised in the course "Idea of Progress" Technological Progress = Material Progress - Human condition is getting continually better - Will continue to get better in the future Sometimes technological progress seems to get out of control Traffic congestion - we are dependent on technology of automobile. Therefore look at two related issues: - What has been the effect of material progress? - Do we feel happy as a result of material benefits? Concept of material progress is unique to each society Developing countries have fundamental concerns: life expectancy; basic physical necessities. Developed countries have sufficient goods and services.
