Communication and Information Technology 2 Communication and Information Technology Technology in health care has played a huge role in how information is received and delivered. Technology such as electronic medical records has made it easier to communicate patient information from one provider to another and according to Hartswood, Procter, Rouncefield, & Slack (2003), “From the beginning, the EMR has been seen as the solution to the need for timely and location independent access to comprehensive patient data that can be integrated with respect both to type (clinicians’ notes, medical imaging, charts etc.) and to time (a single patient-centered record of each and every interaction between patient and healthcare service providers) (pg. 243, para 2).” Because of the accessibility of electronic medical records this type of system that is used and implemented by a number of heath care organizations making ones enhancement on knowledge an important one when its concerning how and why this system is used. Financial Impact When introducing the system of electronic medical records into an organization there will be a financial impact that will both affect the organization at the being of implementation and over the life of the organization. When first switching to a system such as this type, startup costs will be significant because software, servers, and computers will need to be purchased and employees will need to be trained in the converting of patient information and the running of the equipment. Along with short-term costs, the costs of this system will also

Communication and Information Technology 3 improve an organization over time as well because of having constantly to retrain individuals as the technology changes, store the files containing patient information, and retain individuals with the capability to process, redesign, and train individuals on the workings of the system (Walker, 2005). Along with the financial obligations put on an organization to implement and maintain this system there are also a number of advantages and disadvantages to using a system such as this one.
