Kerry O’Sullivan March 22, 2011 AP Environmental Science Period 2 Pros and Cons of Renewable Energy Sources Advantages of Solar Energy: 1. No carbon dioxide emissions. 2. The use of solar energy to produce electricity allows the user to become less dependent on the worlds fossil fuel supplies. 3. It is free 4. Very low land disturbance 5. Fast construction (1-2 years) 6. Moderate cost. The initial investment of solar cells may be high, once installed; they provide a free source of electricity, which will pay off over the coming years. The costs are reduced with natural gas and turbine backup 7. Very low air pollution and water pollution. Solar panels give off no pollution; the only pollution produced as a result of solar panels is the manufacturing of these devices in factories, transportation of the goods, and installation. 8. Solar panels are quickly installed, last 20-40 years, and have a high net energy and work on cloudy days 9. Produces energy very quietly 10.
