Labels can – facilitate effective communication – establishes eligibility for access, services, benefits – defines foci for professional preparation, research & particular advocacy & special interest groups – quickly establish group membership
5 Labels can –isolate, segregate & discriminate –quickly establish group membership –create artificial groups –minimize individual qualities –promote negative attitudes –limit opportunities –be deficit driven, elitist, stigmatizing & demeaning 6 Labels Disadvantages The most appropriate label is usually the one people’s parents have given them 7 NORMAL What is “normal”? – Purported to be “inclusive” In this class, we talk about people, students or children with disabilities, the Disabled, and special education – NOT exceptional or special children – Position: living in the world with an impairment or disability does not make one “exceptional” or “special” 20 20 Communicating About Disabilities Person First Language No tearjerking, emotional stories of superhuman acts or tales of overcoming disability No use of terms like “suffers” “confined to a wheelchair” “invalid” “crippled” “unfortunate” No use of generic labels “the retarded”
