-social psychology-the branch of psychology concerned w/ the way individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by others -topics-conformity and obedience, behavior in groups, person perception, attribution processes, interpersonal attraction and love, attitudes, prejudice and discrimination -the power of the situation-society and culture, status and roles -leadership styles: democratic, authoritarian, laissez faire -Kurt Lewin-a pioneer social psychologist -conformity and obedience-Asch studies (effect of group size and unanimity), Milgram studies -some reasons for conformity-social comparison, approval (reinforcement), going along w/ group norms, avoidance of social disapproval -behavior in groups-a group is at least two people who interact and share something, and have some mutual responsibility for what happens to other members of group; norms, communication and power; the Bystander Effect (examples: Kitty Genovese; diffusion of responsibility); social loafing and group productivity; making decisions in groups (group polarization, groupthink) -person perception (forming impressions of other people)-physical appearance (personality, competence, honesty), media influence, pay off, social schemas (cognitions), stereotypes (gender, ethnic, occupational
