Foreign Policy 12/3/10 1. An overview a. In an environment where there is lots of need to control own territory 2. Values, roles, instruments a. Every county has a set of values or policies it wants to peruse. i. US anti communist ii. spread democracy. iii. Capitalist expansion iv. Self interest(over whelming goal of policy) b. Roles-roles played to accomplish goals-warrior, trader, negotiator c. Instruments- military, diplomats etc 3. The logic of free trade and the concept of comparative advantage a. Even though it “cost” more to make each coat in country poor than rich, country poor is better off using its coasts to buy operating systems While it is absolutely disadvantaged, it is comparatively advantage. b. Similarly country rich is better off specializing in operating systems because that’s where it has a comparative advantage, and it can significantly reduce its cost of coats through trade. c.
