Biol 1510 Fall 2007 The Niche Definition: the set of physical and biological parameters that define the living requirements and living conditions of a species. A niche is a multidimensional volume in resource space that describes the set of environmental and biological conditions under which the species can survive. The niche of a species may change in response to competition and environmental change. Over time, selection may alter the niche of an organism.

Biol 1510 Fall 2007 The Niche Often defined as an organism’s “way of life” or “role” in a community ( after Charles Elton, 1927 ) Alternatively, the sum of all sites in a community where a given species can live ( after Joseph Grinnell, 1917 ) More broadly defined as the intersection of the ranges of environmental parameters within which a given species can persist ( after G. E. Hutchinson, 1957 ) realized niche : in the presence of species that have a negative impact on the organism (competitors, predators, pathogens) fundamental niche : in the absence of such other species niches of different species generally have minimal overlap

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
