Cout d’état: Gatekeeper state caused phenomenon of cout d’états. Many post-colonial states were gatekeeper states and did not have effective gatekeeper states where new leaders could be elected in. You had a vertical state where political access was difficult. Leaders were very connected to the state’s military-strong power but too much military influence. Kenneth Kaunda-first president of Zambia, leader of UNEP party, Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland- discuss how Zambia came out of this political experiment. Federation of Rhodesia-experiment, not many before WWII. Way of collectiving white settler interests and African interests together rather than having three diff colonies. Progressive government. Mau Mau to east and apartheid to South-tried to prevent problems of neighbors. Constructive Engagement-policy of US towards apartheid in South Africa. Directed towards engaging in diplomacy with ANC and apartheid government. Remarkable move because at time ANC was considered terrorist. US had supported apartheid for awhile because anti-comm, until 1977? (sohetto uprising)
