Review the rubric 3. Carefully read the passage multiple times: o Note first impressions of total effect o Note shifts of pattern, thought, voice, tone, flow o Reinforce or adjust first impression 4. Try to identify the nature of the whole: o How does the passage function on its own (internally)? o How does the passage fit into the context of the larger work (externally)? 5.
