2010 Generic Scoring Guidelines: Free Response or Open Ended Question Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison 9 Generally, essays scored a nine (9) reveal more sophisticated analysis and more effective control of language than do essays scored an eight (8). The writing style of a 9 essay is especially impressive, as is the relationship between the text and the subtext and the inclusion of supporting detail. The highest level of supporting detail comes directly from the text itself ; direct quotations that reveal the author’s style and/or the context of the work itself. 9.8 These essays will effectively and cohesively address the prompt. First, they refer to an appropriate work for the task ( in this case, Invisible Man ) and provide specific and relevant references from the text to illustrate and support the writer’s thesis. These essays offer a persuasive analysis of how the author uses literary techniques to address the task at hand. The writers make a strong case for their interpretation of the task at hand . They explore the possibilities of the elements of literature
