Directions for Poetry Performance Workshop In groups of 4 or 5… 1) Read “Do You Have Any Advice For Those Of Us Just Starting Out?” by Ron Koertge. As a group, establish a base meaning. What is the poem saying? What’s the significance of the title? What is the tone of the poem? Are there any poetic devices that stand out? Etc. 2) Take turns performing the poem. Each group member will perform the poem at least once. 3) After each group member performs, take a minute make the chart below and record a “gem” (something the performer did well) and an “opportunity” (something the performer could do to improve) before the next group member’s turn. 1 chart per group is fine. Things to consider: *Voice (volume, tempo, enunciation) *Style (tone, inflection, passion) *Body language and presentation *Clear understanding of the poem and ability to communicate its meaning 4) After each group member has performed, come to a consensus about which group member performed the poem the best.
