Harlem Renaissance: What Is It? Renaissance = re- (back, again) + -naissance (birth); comes  from the Latin word nasci which means “to be born” So “renaissance” means rebirth or born again, and this was  something that was occurring in Harlem, NY Deep thought: As we will see, African Americans didn’t have  much respect in the U.S. prior to this time period, nor did they  have much of a voice in the culture or society, so…rebirth of  what?  Is it really rebirth of African American culture or are they  inventing that portion of American culture during this  movement?

Harlem Renaissance:  When Are We? Historians debate when the Harlem Renaissance  officially began and ended It is framed between WWI and WWII 1917 (U.S. enters WWI) to 1939 (beginning of  WWII) Height of Harlem Renaissance was during 1920s Great Depression in 1929 is where the enthusiasm  started to decline. Everyone had bigger problems  on their mind and could no longer focus attention  to emerging African American culture.

Harlem Renaissance:  How Did We Get Here? In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. So,  slavery ended only 50ish years before the Harlem Renaissance  began. Nearly 4 million African Americans had newly acquired  freedom and were suddenly able to pursue education and  decent jobs, including political office.
