Analyzing “Cross” by Langston Hughes using “Big Cheat  Sheet for Analyzing Poetry” Speaker: A person of black and white heritage who is having an identity crisis because he feels like he doesn’t belong in either race (Seen in 1 st two and last line) Speaker is reflecting on his person/family NOTE: make sure you understand that the speaker isn’t always the poet Audience: Probably writing this for other people who are going through an identity crisis due to their race or some other trait that is conflicting with society during this time Could also be writing it for himself, purely for reflection Intended effect = portray the internal struggle of African Americans that comes as a result of the external struggles they face (oppression, stereotypes, racism, etc.) Tone/Voice: Tone has some mild remorse (for cursing parents) but is moving towards acceptance of his two different ethnicities A “where do I go from here?” tone, self-reflective, curious about his identity Certainly not upbeat and happy. (Ex. Focuses on the death of parents and himself and how deaths are different rather than focusing on a happy event like marriage.) Rhythm/Meter/Rhyme: No meter (pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. Remember Shakespeare who wrote in the meter of iambic pentameter?) Rhythm created by the rhyme, several 6 syllable lines, and lots of one syllable words. Rhythm mimics the jazz/blues beat, which was popular during this time
