He is possibly schizophrenic which causes him to have auditory and visual hallucinations at times. But he also pretends to be deaf and dumb which allows him to see and hear a lot more than a normal character. Ultimately, you need to think about how his descriptions could be a truer account of things than if he saw things like you or me. Is the world really controlled by machinery? Could society be seen as a sort of combine? Is the Nurse really all powerful? Section 1: Characters You are introduced to several main characters in this part of the book.
