Today's objectives th Students will demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary meaning and usage. Students will understand what a clich is and identify Holden's value systems through his use of clichs. Students will practice writing using a 6 trait rubric. Friday, August 28th
Today's agenda Vocabulary quiz Partner activity: Holden's Value System Writing practice: Your value system or the phonies that surround you Catcher in the Rye: Vocabulary Quiz #1 (chapters 1-7) You need your own paper Read the directions When you are finished, staple your vocabulary homework sheets (2) to your quiz and turn them into the box for your class period. Catcher in the Rye: Vocabulary Quiz #1 (chapters 1-7) For each vocabulary word, write your definition of the word and use it in a sentence that demonstrates you understand the word's meaning. Autobiography Dough Ostracize Ironical Phony Sheer Parlor Falsetto Conceited Aggravate Muffler Monotonous Psychoanalyze Halitosis Friday, August 28 What is a clich? th An overused word that is so generalized as to be meaningless. Ex. "Nice" Originally meant foolish/simple. Now we use it for a variety of positive meanings. (A nice day is different from a nice person). Friday, August 28 th "Phony" is a clich that Holden uses a lot. You can work individually or in pairs to find 3 examples where Holden uses the word "phony" and fill out the handout. We will come back for a whole class discussion in a few minutes. Your ICW Prompt: Write about some of the things you find to be "phony" in your society or school. Site specific examples and explain why you think these things are "phony." OR Write about your own value system. What traits or qualities do you value? Why? Friday, August 28
