Checkpoint: Legislation Legacy Indian Farmers Granted $760 Million from USDA The Indian farmers have settled a long pending case against the USDA in the amount of $760 million dollars. The case ( Keepseagle v. Vilsack) which put the Native Americans against the U.S. government. This is one of the largest settlements ever won by the American Indians. This was a nationwide class action lawsuit that required the U.S. Department of Agriculture to pay damages to thousands of American Indians. This lawsuit was filed over 11 years ago. The lawsuit came about when the Indian farmers were denied the same opportunities’ as the white farmers. They were unable to get the low interest loans from the USDA which caused them to loose a lot of money. Due to the help of the Attorney General and Secretary Vilsack none of this would have happened. The legislation in this seems to be “Equal Rights” which means everyone should be treated fairly and without bias from their government. “At a fairness hearing on April 28
