Defining Marketing 2 Defining Marketing After extensive research, the following paragraphs provide what the researcher believes to be the most accurate definitions of marketing; including the researchers’ personal definition of marketing, and its importance in organizational success, along with examples. The Dictionary of Marketing defines marketing in many ways; among those definitions are the following: 1. The act or process of buying and selling in a market. 2. The commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer. 3. Process associated with promoting for sale goods or services. The classic components of marketing are the Four Ps: product, price, place, and promotion-the selection and development of the product , determination of price , selection, and design of distribution channels (place), and all aspects of generating or enhancing demand for the product, including advertising (promotion) (Marketing Dictionary, 2009.)
