Ultra-violet light has a higher frequency than visible light and so, using the formula  E = hf , ultra-violet photons have  more energy than visible ones. Thus, ultra-violet photons can cause more damage to the cells in our bodies when  they impact on them To summarize what ultraviolet light actually, it is essentially electromagnetic radiation. Ultraviolet light has a wavelength that is shorter than that of visible light; however, it is longer than x-rays. Ultraviolet (UV) light has shorter wavelengths than visible light. Though these waves are invisible to the human eye, some insects, like bumblebees, can see them. Ultra-violet light (UV) is electromagnetic radiation invisible to human eyes. Overexposure to UV radiation may cause skin cancer, damage of the eye and the suppression of immune system. The eyes are very sensitive to UV radiation. This is due to the fact that cornea absorbs high doses of UV light. This may cause a temporary clouding of the cornea--a condition known as snow-blindness.
