Nichole Newcome Genetics Assignment 2 Cloning What is Cloning? -Cloning is a creating an organism that has a genetic match Identical twins are clones of each other Dolly the sheep was cloned in 1997 How do you make a clone?? - Artificial Embryo Twinning - Somatic cell nuclear transfer Artificial Embryo Twinning It is considered the low-tech version of cloning Mimics the natural process of creating identical twins The natural process of twins occurs just after fertilization, the zygote tries to divide into a two-celled embryo, the two cells separate. This makes them genetically identical The artificial embryo twinning process occurs in a Petri dish instead of the mother, manual separation of the embryo into individual cells and then allowing each cell to divide on its own. -embryos are then placed into surrogate mother, carried to term and delivered Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) This was the method used to create Dolly Somatic cell- a cell in the body that is not a germ cell, (egg or sperm,) every somatic cell has two complete sets of chromosomes, whereas germ cells only have one.
