1/3/11 1 Course Syllabus ENT 4014 Venture Formation Spring 2011 Instructor Stephen Budd (813) 974-6247 Office Location: BSN 3521 Office Hours: By appointment Course Prerequisites Course is open to junior- or senior-level business or industrial engineering majors, or students admitted into either of the minors in entrepreneurship. Course Description The course integrates business principles with entrepreneurship and venture creation and will provide an overview of the basic concepts of entrepreneurship focusing on the nature, environment, and risks and rewards of new venture formation. Students will study the factors involved in starting and managing a small- to medium-sized business, and will develop real-world skills that will greatly increase the likelihood of success of their own entrepreneurial endeavors or for opportunities developed within an existing organization (“intrapreneurship”). Course Goals and Objectives Successful students in this course will be able to: screen ideas to determine whether a business concept is an opportunity worth pursuing or just another great idea; assess an opportunity’s market potential and competitive environment; understand sources of capital for start-up and early-stage companies; understand how passion, leadership, interdisciplinary team building, innovation, and competitive advantage contribute value to the new business; develop a business plan to pursue a new venture, and; identify resources that will help you develop and grow your business ideas. Methods of Instruction You will be learning 100% online (asynchronously) this semester. Instructional methods will include assigned readings, independent research, lectures, quizzes, and exams. Technology Information Access to the Internet (World Wide Web) is required. Use of the Windows Internet Explorer browser is recommended for compatibility with the Blackboard system, which is provided by the University of South Florida and is the courseware package to be utilized in this course. Visit for technology support assistance and questions. To gain access to the course through the USF servers: 1. Have your USF student identification card 2. Complete the USF Net ID Process 3. Log on to The Blackboard courseware package is being used as a vehicle for virtual classroom space. To access your "My USF" page go to the following link: .
