Jennifer Romero Soc 2 Due 03-01-11 Ritzer Chapter 1 summary The principles of fast food restaurant chains are taking over more and more of the United States and the world. McDonalds seems to have started these phenomena of modern society and there are McDonalds everywhere. The McDonalds model has been extended to all different kinds of restaurants including more upscale such as Red Lobster. Other countries have their own McDonaldized chains, such as Tim Horton’s in Canada. Even furniture has been McDonaldized such as IKEA. Almost everything has been McDonaldized, including sex. Globally McDonalds seems to be more of a symbol of peace according to Thomas Friedman calling it “Golden Arches Theory of Conflict Prevention”. The dimensions of McDonaldization include: Efficiency (optimum method to get from one point to another, hungry to full). Calculability (portion size and cost, bigger is better). Predictability (products and services will be the same over time in all locations). Control over customers (lines, limited menus,
