Sheet1 Page 1 FIRE DEPARTMENT FIRST RESPONDER PROGRAM BACKGROUND: The Fire Department has an agreement with the County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to provide advanced life support (ALS) within the city limits. The County EMS provides complete medical services in the unincorporated areas. In addition, they provide basic life support (BLS) service within the city limits. The definitions of the two services are generally predicated on the physical status of the patient. Life threatening situations are handled by the ALS team and the other circumstances are serviced by the BLS team. The City's Fire Department Rescue Division is comprised of seven equipped emergency vehicles manned by two certified para-medics. In addition to this, as a back up, all fire fighters are qualified in first aid and CPR. As a matter of policy, the first vehicle available is required to respond to a medical emergency. If a fire company arrives first then they administer medical aid until relieved by the para-medics (thus, the name First Responder). The Department estimates that the cost of keeping the seven emergency fire rescue teams in service last year was approximately $ _____ million.
