Problem 1. Points: 10 A very large data set (N>10000) has a mean value of 9.2 unitsand a standard deviation of 1.1 units. Determine the range of values in which 50% of the data should be found assuming a normal probability desnsity. Answer: 9.2 – 0.7425 xi 9.2 + 0.7425 (50%) Problem 4.11. Points: 12 Partial answer: For set 2 is F i = 50.7 ± 2.53 N (95%). Problem 4.21. FOR REFERENCE ONLY - NOT GRADED Hint: Express the confidence interval in terms of t, S x and N (number of measurements). Comment: For small sample sizes, the gain in this random error is impressive for making some extra measurements. But as N increases, this gain requires considerably more measurements. Doubling N from 10 to 20 is more efficient than increasing N from 1000 to 2000. This is the "diminishing returns" in using N to improve random error.
