Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born 30 August 1797 in London England. When she was a child, she would write small stories of fantasy and amusement, but considering her advocate mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, and her journalist father, William Godwin, she did not see writing as her long term work. Although Percy Shelley encouraged her to write, she did not write seriously until she took a trip with four others. At this time, the volcano, Mount Tambora, erupted and its ashes overshadowed, darkening several places. “The Year Without a Summer” of 1815, Mary, her husband Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, and John William Polidori went to a Lord Byron’s cabin next to Lake Leman (Geneva) in Switzerland.
