An object is traveling in one direction on a straight line so that its distance from some ﬁxed point is given by the table: Find the average speed of the object during the following time intervals: (a) [0 , 1] (d) [1 , 2] (b) [0 , 2] (e) [1 , 3] (c) [0 , 3] (f) [2 , 3] If you had to guess the speed at t = 2 just on the basis of these, what would you guess? 2. The volume (in gallons) of water in a tank is recorded over 1 2 -minute intervals in the table below. Consider volume V ( t ) to be a function of time t (a) How much does the volume of water change between minute 1.5 and minute 3 ? (b) Is the volume V increasing at a constant rate over this period of time? why not? (c) What constant rate (gal/min) would be required to change the volume from the ob- served value at t = 1 . 5 to the one at t = 3 ? (We call this the average rate of change on the interval, in similar fashion to the way average velocity is deﬁned in this section.) (d) What is the average rate of change of the volume with time on the interval: [ 1,1.5 ] ?
