Hon 110 Notes – 4/20/11 Idea to separate church and state comes from Middle Ages High Middle Ages Everything is progressing and moving up Those who work, fight, and pray Divisions of people World had shrunk down and what it used to be People who fight Knight dressed differently than peasant Clothing was highly regulated Laws couldn’t impersonate a noble White for nuns or virgins, not females who have children Knights and lords fought on horseback Two innovations in early Middle Ages of knight on horseback in which did not have Roman Ages -Horseshoes -Stirrups, allow knight to hold the seat Took about mid 700’s, once parts came together, knight became unstoppable Military revolution

Lords and vassals lived together, hunted, and battle together Keep warm all stayed together in great hall Rest of rooms are cold Everybody slept together for warmth Noble women would be responsible for preparing food and care of children Not much leisure Wife of the lord, was a lot of work Few women around Castles were very crude Nobles would travel from castle to another Castle was a form of defense Defensive mechansisms Months in one castle then travel to another Take everything to the other castle Concept of primogeniture -firstborn Around 1000, new concept of identity See family line as vertical (straight line) Concept of giving everything to first born First born son gets everything

Everyone else gets cut out of the deal Others would go to church administration Rise up in the church hierarchy Others would fight, blood feuds Caused a lot of problems in society Families did this to inkept the land All the daughters are also cut out along with the other sons Very hard for society, and second or third son difficult to marry because of no property Always refer to second or third sons as youths, even though may be old A lot of problems in society only trained for war These men aren’t educated for anything else, just for war No lands and war, cause problem to society Non first born sons become problematic in society Second and third sons go to crusades Those who work Vast majority of people Work in agriculture Privilege class leave records

Not poor and low class people Have no idea how the peasants and people who work felt A lot of them not free No slaves, but bound to the land Dirty, one set of clothing, (one for winter and summer) Most people had rotting teeth All the peasants and animals would sleep in the main room together in the winter For warmth and heat Nice bedroom with family and animals such as oxen Not kind of society from being a serf to a knight Not serf to knight, can’t move like that Only way for working men to move up – the church Hard to work for cash At this time, cash is not really the main source for society to work Some peasants were allowed to improve lot by working in church High level churchmen are almost always from aristocrat class
