When there is an open mind, there will always be a scientific frontier here on earth. For decades, researchers have been studying the biology of stem cells to figure out howdevelopment works and to find new ways of treating health problems. The scientific researchersand medical doctors of today hope to make the legendary concept of regeneration into reality bydeveloping therapies to restore lost, damaged, or aging cells and tissues in the human body. Thisresearch has opened new horizons for stem cell research.1It is best to understand first the basics of what makes a stem cell a stem cell. A stem cellis a primitive cell capable of: producing copies of themselves (self-renewal), conversion to moredifferentiated cells (differentiation), proliferation, and lead to regeneration of tissues. Stem cellsare the body’s natural reservoir – replenishing stocks of specialized cells that have been used upor damaged. We all need to make new cells all the time, to keep our body functioning. Stemcells, therefore are essential to the maintenance of the tissues such as blood, skin, gut, andmuscles. Self-renewal is the defining property of stem cells. Specialized cells such as blood andmuscle do not normally replicate themselves, which means that when they are seriously damagedby disease or injury, they cannot replace themselves.
