Ryan Cohen Monday, 6-8:50 pm Ms. Sohn Analysis of Water Lab Report The purpose of this experiment was to analyze dissolved solids in water by comparing and observing both physical and chemical changes in the water. Part 1 of the experiment attempts to measure mass % as well as PPM of dissolved solids, by observed physical changes in the water. Part 2 attempts to actually identify what solids are dissolved in the water, including their chemical reactions, by observed chemical changes in the water. Ultimately, the experiment seeks to reinforce an understanding of solubility and precipitation reactions in aqueous solutions. Part 1 of the experiment, seeks to calculate the mass % and PPM of dissolved salts in tap and ocean water. The student is asked to weigh a beaker with boiling chips, before and after a known volume of water is poured in it. The student then must boil the water in the beaker until all the water has evaporated, leaving the dissolved salts in the beaker. The student then weighs the beaker with the dissolved salt and subtracts it with the mass of the clean beaker, weighed at the beginning of the experiment, revealing the
