Ryan Cohen Monday, 6-8:50 pm 11/16/08 Ms. Sohn Lab Report The purpose of this lab is to analyze the dynamics of equilibrium in solution. By studying the reaction of Fe 3+ and SCN - and applying rules of equilibrium, the lab aims at deriving an equilibrium constant for the reaction. Moreover, the lab introduces the use of computer analysis in a spectrophotometer to determine the concentration of ions in solution. The first part of the experiment aims at finding a calibration curve based on standard solutions for the reaction of Fe 3+ and SCN - . 5 cuvettes of known concentrations of Fe(NO 3 ) 3 and KSCN are mixed in solution forming the net ionic reaction: Fe 3+ + SCN - Fe(SCN) 2+ . Since the initial concentrations and volume of Fe 3+ and SCN - are known, the equilibrium concentration for Fe(SCN) 2+ in each cuvette can be figured. Essentially, each cuvette is analyzed through the spectrophotometer to figure a unique absorption for each solution.
