Comparing Iron(II) and Iron(III) IonsIn this task, you will mix two differentiron compounds with several differentsubstances and describe the results in each case. You’ll compare the chemical behavior of the two differentiron compounds. Before you begin this task, read these lab safety guidelines. Estimated time to complete: 2.5 hours If you’ve purchased an Edmentum lab kit, remove the items that appear in the equipment list. Thechemicals are located inside a box within the kit. You’ll also need distilled or tap water and a hot plate or a microwave oven to complete the activity. For more information about each chemical, view the safety data sheets. Click the Product Resources tab followed by Datasheet. You’ll need these materials: test tube rack test tubes (quantity: 2) disposable pipettes (quantity: 4)test tube brush 50-milliliter Erlenmeyer ask electronic balanceweighing boat scoop stirring rod funnel lter paper wash bottle with distilled water (tap water is acceptable) apron goggles gloves chemicals from kit iron(II) sulfate (16 milliliters) iron(III) nitrate (16 milliliters) potassium thiocyanate (8 milliliters) potassium iodide (8 milliliters) starch (0.25 gram) potassium permanganate (8 milliliters) sodium hydroxide (8 milliliters) microwave oven or hot plate tongs (or oven mitts) Always work safely: Keep lids on the chemical bottles except when you are actively dispensing from abottle. Wear an apron, goggles, and gloves anytime you’re working with chemicals, including during disposal. Do not mix chemicals together except as
instructed in the lab procedure. If a chemical splashes into your eyes, immediately remove any contact lenses and ush your eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention. Keep in mind these pointers about handling the equipment: Use the graduated cylinder to measure volumes of solutions. To avoid contamination, rinse the graduated cylinder with distilled water from the wash bottle before using it to measure a di erent solution. Wash the rinse water down the sink drain. Pipettes may be used to transfer solutions that are not in dropper bottles. Do not use the same pipette for multiple solutions. It may be helpful to
