CHM 3218; Summer 2011 1 Starting Points for CHM 3218 These are some of the key concepts that you should have mastered from CHM 3217 or CHM 2210 & 2211. If you are unfamiliar with any of these, consult the relevant chapters in your text or see me as soon as possible. Since many of these concepts will be extended and applied to biological systems, it is important that you have a firm grasp on these before we cover too much material in CHM 3218. I. Alkanes. Conformational properties of linear alkanes. Ring strain. Conformational properties of cyclic alkanes. II. Stereoisomerism. Chirality and optical activity. Cahn-Ingold-Prelog ( R / S ) nomenclature for absolute configuration. Fischer projections. Diastereomers. III. Haloalkanes. Substitution by bimolecular reactions (S N 2 mechanism). Substitution by unimolecular reactions (S N 1 mechanism). Elimination by bimolecular reactions (E2 mechanism). Elimination by unimolecular reactions (E1 mechanism). IV. Alcohols and Ethers. Acid-base properties of alcohols. Alcohol and ether synthesis by substitution reactions. Epoxides. V. Alkenes. Structure and bonding. Alkene synthesis by elimination reactions. Alkene synthesis by alcohol dehydrations. Hydrogenation.
