Physics 4125 Spring 2007 Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Instructor: J.F. Lecture time : TTH 12:10 – 1:30 118 Nicholson Hall Text : Thermal Physics by David V. Schroeder and Thermodynamics by Enrico Fermi Course website : http://www.phys.lsu.edu/classes/ - for Homework Assignments and Solutions. Purpose : To introduce the concepts and methods of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics at the level of a senior undergraduate physics major, scientist, or engineer. To build problem solving skills and to effectively use mathematics to describe nature. To understand the scientific method and the use of measurement to understand nature. Lectures : There will be 1 and ½ -hour lectures given each Tuesday, and Thursday at 12:10 PM. This course covers chapters 1-7 of your textbook. There are a few sections that will be omitted as noted on the course schedule. You are required to read the assigned relevant material in the textbook prior to attending the lectures (see the following lecture and reading schedule). You will be expected to be able to discuss the relevant material from the reading assignment. It is recommended that you perform the homework problems after reading each section of the text. Homework : A homework assignment consisting of approximately 15 problems and a few questions from the text will be assigned each week. It will be due on Tuesday's at the beginning of class. The first assignment is due on Tuesday January 23th.
