Making Voltage Measurements with the NI USB-6009 Macintosh Version The NI-DAQmx software available in the Windows version of LabVIEW makes use of low-level calls to the Windows operating system, and cannot be used on a Mac. As an alternative, National Instruments has made a NI-DAQmx Base system available for the Macintosh. The Base system is a subset of the Windows version, and is not quite as easy to use (fewer Express VIs), but it has all the capabilities we need for this course. If you try to use the Windows version on the Macintosh systems at the Main Campus or use your PC laptops with LabVIEW and the NI USB 6009 LabVIEW will rewrite the firmware on the NI USB-6009 DAQ hardware and it will have to be re-iniitialized for use with the Macinstosh computers, please do not do this. As you prepare to do temperature measurement and your project you need to become familiar with the NI USB-6009 DAQ interface and how to do basic measurements. Goals Measure a single voltage until the user presses a stop button. Display this voltage on a gauge or meter. Measure a single voltage until the user presses a stop button. Display results as a graph of voltage vs time. Save the V vs T data to a file. ENGR 201 Evaluation and Presentation of Experimental Data I Spring 2010-2011 (201035) Original: Dr. Scoles 5/2/11 page 2 of 12 National Instruments USB-6009 DAQ interface HP E3631A DC power supply, 6 V output terminals Screwdriver If you have viewed the Apple/NI video and have generated your own data acquisition VI you will have a good head start on the lab procedure. If not, the steps provided here will allow you to capture voltage data from our USB interface. Procedure - Preparation 1. Turn your computer on 2. Before opening LabVIEW, connect the USB-6009 to a USB port. The USB-6009 is powered through the USB port, and no power switch is provided. The green LED should begin flashing when the unit is plugged in. 3. Make sure the USB-6009 is recognized by the computer by running the “ lsdaq” application. This application is in the NI-DAQmx Base folder within the LabVIEW distribution 1 . The USB-6009 should appear in the “NI-DAQmx Base Device List” as “Dev1”. If it does not, contact your lab TA for help. Quit lsdaq when you are finished. 4.
