4 Discrimination Overt discrimination: Knowingly and willingly denying diverse individuals access to opportunities and positive outcomes. Unethical and illegal Unintentional discrimination: Organizations and individuals attempt to achieve equality in key outcomes and opportunity, but fall short. Common and complex.

5 Ethical rationale for equal opportunity and fair treatment Fundamental values of equal opportunity and justice. Martin Luther King‘s “I have a dream” speech “I have a dream … deeply rooted in the American dream” “I have a dream … that my children will be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin” In organizational contexts, justice is thought of as having two components: Distributive Justice : Perceived fairness of the amount and allocation of rewards among individuals. Procedural Justice : Perceived fairness of the process used to determine the distribution of rewards. Both are important. Much research suggests violations of procedural justice are seen as especially egregious.
