The most basic concept of sensory processing is the encoding of the strength or level of the stimulus into the spike rate of action potentials generated in the axon of the sensory neuron. 2. In any sensory system, we can generally identify a structure or group of structures that is responsible for how energy of the stimulus is feed into the transducer part or transducer cell of the system. This component or functional unit is called the hair cells/stereocilia . 3. Because the stereocilia of hair cells are relatively stiff, the effective stimulus is not bending over of the hairs, but rather shearing displacements of the stereocilia. 4. The minute little elastic "strings" connecting between tips of the stereocilia and which are believed to operate ion gates through the hairs are called tip links . 5.
