Human Physiology BIO2160 Functional Organization and Control- Terminology: 1. Negative Feedback : this process reverses the initiating stimulus. 2. Positive Feedback : the response of a system goes in the same direction as the originating stimulus that set in motion. 3. Vasodilation : dilation of blood vessel, as by action of a nerve or drug. 4. Vasoconstriction : constriction of a blood vessel, as by a nerve or drug. 5. Homeostasis : maintenance of constant conditions in the internal enviroment. Ex. Regulation of arterial pressure, regulation of blood glucose, regulation of carbon dioxide and oxygen concentration in the ECF. Failure to maintain homeostasis results in a disease state. 6. Intracellular Fluid : (ICF) the fluid inside of cells. Contains large amounts of potassium , magnesium and phosphate ions. 7. Extracellular Fluid : (ECF) the fluid that surrounds the cells. Contains sodium , chloride , bicarbonate , and nutrients for cells . ECF is divided into 1) blood plasma which is inside the vascular system, and 2) intersitial fluid
