Short 1 Cameron Short Ms. Bray English 101 04 November 2009 Emotional and Physical Effects of the Great War Wilfred Owen’s poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” argues that it is gruesome and unnecessary for young soldiers to die for their country. Using vivid imagery, Owen describes the physical and emotional effects of gas warfare on soldiers. The meaning of the poem is extremely influential due to the fact that Owen was a British soldier during this time. Wilfred Owen has personal experience in the war which helps the audience to better understand the time in which the war itself was happening. The historical connections, such as Owen’s personal war experience, the effects of trench warfare on soldiers, and the use of poisonous gas, strongly support the theme of the piece. The elements of history in the piece also add emphasis and factual information to the poem. Wilfred Owen was a British soldier until he died in combat in 1918. Because Owen witnessed firsthand the physical and emotional effects of the war on soldiers, this adds a horrifying touch to the message of the poem. The poem demonstrates a sense of irony because the title is “Dulce et Decorum Est,” and the poem ends with the repetition of the title, “ Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori ” (Owen, lines 27-28). The Roman poet Horace coined this phrase in his work; it means, “It is sweet and fitting to die for one’s country.” Western culture continues to abide by philosophies such as these and demonstrates the feelings of people during this time.
