1. Why did he confess his “guilt”? Does he deserve sympathy?’ a. Confess guilt: has always followed the Party’s “end justifies the mean” policy for the greater good, not the individual; through that, he has condemned several people and has started to feel guilty about his choices; he questions that although they were orders and furthered the party, we’re the right/correct? He has used others around him to further his career and is only now growing a conscious. Since he has always followed the logic of the party, his last “service” is to participate in the show trial [sacrificed as scapegoats for the party] and to set straight was is right and wrong to the masses and make them understand that opposition of the government is a crime and by that he is strengthening the legitimacy of the Stalinist era; during his time there, he eventually welcomes death and his release from his growing guilt “… if wrong, I shall pay” b. Sympathy: yes, he was only following the party’s orders and it’s rule of logic and it only hurt him; Stalin was getting rid of the old system to replace it with his controlled new system; back when he was young, he fought for the revolution and for the continuation of the state only to be betrayed by its system he helped to develop;
