Alternatives to Confucianism 03/02/2011 11:58:00 Confucianism has been the most influential system in China. Heavily influenced  how things were shaped by Confucius. “Hundred Schools” of Philosophy Confucianism Mohism o Started by Mozi (479-438/381 BC) First half = “Black” Could be a slave b/c of tatoo? Others think  he had more noble origins. o “Profit and utility” Criteria to judge value of an idea. V. different from Confucius  whom focused on morality. Con: petty man concerned with  making money, pure man interested in morality o “Universal love” mutual affection among people. For Confucius, love extended  first to family, then to extended family/clan, then the community  etc etc. Incremental. o “The will of Heaven” Important to understand his ideas of why people must have  universal love. Because we are all created by heaven, therefore  we must love all others because they also came from heaven. Legalism
