PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION 2 Protected Health Information: HIPAA and Social Media Usage Nurses are bound by the law to provide quality patient care without compromising patient privacy and patient data. “Protected Health Information (PHI) is defined as any information related to an individual’s past, present or future physical or mental health”[ CITATION Dro17 \l 1033 ]. PHI includes all information that could be used to identify an individual. A person’s medical record and payment history is PHI and is not to be shared with any unauthorized personal[ CITATION Moo19 \l 1033 ]. Every patient has the right that their information be protected, privacy from their information being shared to people or on social media and confidentiality meaning information be shared with third parties only with written permission[CITATION Gle18 \l 1033 ]. The privacy rule regulated that use and disclosure of PHI and established standards that a person working with health information must protect patient’s medical information.
