Unformatted text preview: Scatterplots & Trendlines Section 2.4 Lecture 5 1 STAT 225, Dallas Bateman, Spring 2010 Scatter Plots A graphical representation of the relationship between two quantitative variables 2 STAT 225, Dallas Bateman, Spring 2010 Scatter Plots Dangers of extrapolating too far into the future or outside the scope of the experiment: one can interpolate using the data given and ONLY WITHIN the range of data given using a trendline, however, one does not know what happens beyond the scope of the data, if suddenly things shoot up or drop off and are no longer linear. We must be cautious when predicting beyond what our data tells us. 3 STAT 225, Dallas Bateman, Spring 2010 Scatter Plots If we have data for cars ages 3-8 and it shows a negative relationship, as a car gets older its price/value decreases, we might see a linear relationship, however we cannot be sure that the linear relationship will extend far beyond our range in data. If we try to extend our trendline out to predict the value of a car that is 15 years old, we could run into negative values implying that beyond the data we have collected, the relationship is no longer linear....
